NCA is named after Ngorongoro Crater which is a large volcanic region found in NCA. This area is conserved and maintained by the NCA authority of the Tanzanian government. The Ngorongoro Wildlife Conservation Act – 2009 was framed with new restrictions for human invasion for agricultural sustainability, thereby, the act displaced Maasai pastoralists. The volcanic complex of Ngorongoro Pliocene is composed of eight Eyasi Half-graben addressed by Gregory Rift Western Escarpment, which makes the eastern boundary. The Lake Eyasi bounds the graben-halk on the southwest region. Out of eight, 5 volcanoes are dome shaped. The other three volcanoes are calderas. The caldera volcanoes are fed by the rivers Munge and Oljoro Nyuki. Lake Magadi is shallow, having a depth of 1.7 meters and is alkaline in nature. The other volcanoes such as Empakaai, Lemagrut, Olmoti, Oldeani, Loolmalasin, and Sadiman are included in the complex. Serengeti Plains that are found on the northwestern portion of NCA include Gol Mountain inselbergs, Slei Plains, and Oldupai Gorge. The inselbergs are found as a part of mica schist and Mozambique Belt.
Ngorongoro Crater:
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most significant features of NCA, which is the world’s largest inactive volcanic caldera. It was estimated that the height of the volcano range is from 14,800 feet to 19,000 feet. The crater in the volcano flows at about 5,900 feet ASL (above sea level). The volcano erupted two million years ago.

The stream of Munge continuously drains the Crater of Olmoti to the north, which acts as a chief water source that drains at the seasonal salt lake at the Crater center. The lake is called Makat (means salt) and Magadi. The Lerai, yet another stream, runs on the humid forests towards the south and feeds the Lerai forest. The Lerai drains into Magadi Lake simultaneously.
The Ngoitokitok spring is the major water source in the crater which is found near the eastern crater wall. It is a picnic site for tourists that is inhabited by lions, hippopotamuses, elephants, and many other animals.
Some small springs are also found around the floor of the crater, which is an important source of water supply for animals and local Maasai people during the drought season .
Animals in NCA:
Roughly about 25,000 animals populated the Crater. Large animals such as rhinoceros, declined in number by 108 in 1964, 1965, and 1966; and the next decline occurred by 11-14 in 1995. Then, the population of African buffalo and hippopotamus also declined. The blue wild beasts were about 7,000 in number in 1994, Eland, and Grant’s zebra (4,000), Thomson’s gazelles were also found in the crater. The Leri forest is the best habitat that harbors Waterbucks around it.
East African wild dog, African leopard, and Cheetah were the rare animals found in NCA. Spotted hyenas were used to study the conservation strategies of NCA from 1996. During wet seasons, half of the zebra population and more than 20% of wild bees were found to vacate the Crater region of NCA. But in the rainy season, Cape buffalo was found to be higher in population than any other animals in NCA.
The lake Magadi was also inhabited thousands of flamingos. The NCA crater is a well-known area for the densest population of lions. Since the crater is a natural enclosure, the lions can able conveniently inbreed and the number increase, which might be due to the migration of male lions that enter the crater, and fewer amounts of newer bloodlines enter the gene pool.
Lions’ population is often infected with many disease outbreaks caused by stable flies that suck animal blood. This results in the draining of blood flow in animals caused by skin sources and the animal gets infected. This led to a decline in lion population from 75 to 12. The population was regained to around 100 during 1975 and was stable till 1983. The population of the lions was influenced to an extent by the arrival of male lions that dominated the population and led to an increase. The population is greatly affected by diseases such as canine distemper.
